SSAT Math Time Management: How to Finish 25 Questions in 30 Minutes

The SSAT Upper Level Math section gives you 30 minutes to answer 25 questions. That’s 72 seconds per question — just over one minute each.

Sounds manageable, right? Except the questions aren’t evenly difficult. Some take 20 seconds. Others take 3 minutes. And if you spend too long on the hard ones, you’ll run out of time before reaching easier questions at the end.

After working with 25+ SSAT students a year for over 25 years, I — Kelly Campbell, author of Hacking the SSAT Upper Level Math — have seen this pattern constantly: students who know the math but can’t finish the section. They get stuck on problem 12, spend 4 minutes trying to solve it, then have to rush through the last 8 questions — making careless errors on problems they could have answered correctly with more time.

SSAT time management is a skill. On the SSAT, it’s often the difference between a 1800 and a 2000.

The short answer: The most effective SSAT math time management strategy is the Two-Pass System: spend the first 15 minutes answering every question you can solve in under 60 seconds, circle the rest, then use the next 12 minutes on the harder ones with a strict 2-minute limit each. Combined with a handful of key shortcuts, this approach saves most students 5–10 minutes per section — enough to finish comfortably and check your work.


What 30 Minutes Actually Means

The questions aren’t created equal:

Easy questions (about 40% of the test): simple arithmetic, basic fractions, straightforward word problems. Time needed: 20–40 seconds each.

Medium questions (about 40%): geometry with multiple steps, probability, ratios, word problems requiring translation. Time needed: 60–90 seconds each.

Hard questions (about 20%): quadratics, systems of equations, complex geometry, symbol problems. Time needed: 2–3 minutes each — unless you know shortcuts.

The winning strategy isn’t to go faster across the board. It’s to spend less time on easy questions so you have more time for medium and hard ones — and to skip the hardest ones strategically rather than letting them eat your clock.


Why Students Run Out of Time

Mistake 1: Getting stuck on one problem.

You hit problem 8. It’s hard. You spend 3 minutes, then 4, then 5, determined to get it. Meanwhile, problems 20–25 might have been easier — but you never reached them. One hard problem costs you 4–5 easier problems at the end.

Mistake 2: Not knowing shortcuts.

Mistake 3: Slow arithmetic.

There’s no calculator on the SSAT. If basic arithmetic is slow, you’ll spend all your time calculating instead of solving. Multiplying 47 × 8 on paper takes 45 seconds. Mentally: \( (50 \times 8) \ – \ (3 \times 8) = 400 \ – \ 24 = 376 \) — done in 10 seconds. Mistake 4: Not using answer choices strategically.

The SSAT is multiple choice — the answer is literally in front of you. On a question like “Multiply \( 6ab^2(4b \ – \ 3) \),” you don’t need to complete the full distribution. Glance at the answer choices: it’s likely all have different coefficients, so just check what \( 6 \times 4 \) and \( 6 \times 3 \) give you and look for 24 and 18. Done in seconds.

Mistake 5: Never skipping.

Some students wrestle with every problem, determined to answer all 25. But the SSAT has a ¼ point guessing penalty — blind guessing on 5 hard problems will likely net you zero points. Skipping the hardest 2–3 problems and using that time to ensure you get the easier ones right will almost always produce a higher score.


The Two-Pass System

This is the approach that consistently works best.

Pass 1 (First 15 minutes): Answer everything you can solve quickly

Go through questions 1–25. For each one, ask: Can I solve this in under 60 seconds?

✅ Yes → Solve it now

❌ No → Circle the question number and move on immediately

Goal: Answer 15–18 questions (all the easy and medium ones) in the first 15 minutes.

Pass 2 (Next 12 minutes): Tackle the circled questions

Now go back to the hard ones. For each:

  • Spend up to 2 minutes trying to solve it
  • If you’re still stuck after 2 minutes, make your best educated guess and move on
  • Never leave a question blank if you can eliminate at least one answer choice

Final 3 minutes: Review

Check your easy answers for careless errors — wrong bubble, arithmetic slip, misread question. This is where points are most commonly lost and most easily recovered.

Skip a question if:

  • You don’t recognize the topic
  • It would take more than 2 minutes to solve
  • You can’t eliminate any answer choices

Don’t skip if:

  • You can eliminate 2+ answer choices (now guessing is worth it)
  • You recognize the approach but need a moment to recall it
  • It’s a medium question you could solve with a bit more time

Shortcuts That Save 5–10 Minutes Per Section

Pythagorean Triples

“A right triangle has legs 6 and 8. Find the hypotenuse.”

School method: \( 6^2 + 8^2 = c^2 \), solve for c. Time: 60 seconds.

SSAT shortcut: Recognize \( [3-4-5] \) scaled by 2 → hypotenuse = 10. Time: 5 seconds.

Know your triples:

\( [3-4-5] \) (and multiples: \([6-8-10]\), \([9-12-15]\), \([15-20-25]\))

\( [5-12-13] \) (and multiples: \([10-24-26]\), \( [15-36-39] \)).

The 10% Trick

“What is 15% of 240?”

Slow method: \( 240 \times 0.15 \), long multiply. Time: 45 seconds.

Fast method: 10% of 240 = 24, 5% = 12, so 15% = 36. Time: 10 seconds.

Choose Numbers

“Rent goes up 20% one month, then down 25% the next. What percent of the original rent is the new price?”

SSAT shortcut: Choose \$100 as the original price. After 20% up: \$120. After 25% down: \$90. \$90 is 90% of \$100 — no further calculation needed. Time: 15 seconds.

When to Round

“Which is closest to \( 212.83 \times (28.07 \ – \ 17.3) \)?”

SSAT shortcut: Spot “closest to,” round aggressively: \( 200 \times (30 \ – \ 20) = 2000 \). Time: 15 seconds vs. 2+ minutes of long multiplication.

The Survey Formula

“In a class of 30 students, 18 play soccer, 12 play basketball, and 7 play both. How many play neither?”

SSAT shortcut: Total − (A + B − Both) = Neither → \( 30 \ – \ (18 + 12 \ – \ 7) = 7 \). Time: 20 seconds.

If you’re still not finishing after practicing this system, the fix is usually one of three things: you need more shortcuts, you need faster arithmetic, or you’re not enforcing the 2-minute rule strictly enough.


The Bottom Line

Most students think the solution to running out of time is to go faster. It’s not. The solution is to work smarter: skip strategically, use shortcuts, and allocate your time based on question difficulty rather than question order.

The Two-Pass System alone — combined with a handful of key shortcuts — is enough to reclaim 5–10 minutes per section for most students. That’s the difference between rushing through the last 8 questions and finishing with time to check your work.

Should I guess or skip on the SSAT upper level math section?

It depends on how many answer choices you can eliminate. If you can eliminate at least one answer choice, guessing is mathematically worth it — your expected score from guessing improves the more choices you can rule out. If you truly can’t eliminate any answer choices and have no idea how to approach the problem, skip it — a random guess on a 5-choice question is statistically neutral but can hurt you if you’re unlucky. The clearest rule: never leave a question blank if you’ve done any work on it at all, because that work has almost certainly let you eliminate at least one choice.

How many questions should I skip on the SSAT math section?

Most students should plan to skip 2–4 of the hardest questions on their first pass and return to them with remaining time. Skipping isn’t failing — it’s strategy. The goal is to guarantee points on questions you know before spending time on questions you don’t.
