How to Choose a Math Tutor: What to Look For (And What to Avoid)

Hiring a math tutor is a significant investment — both financially and in your teenager’s time.

Choose the right tutor and you’ll see progress within weeks: better grades, stronger confidence, genuine understanding of concepts. Choose the wrong tutor and you’ll waste money on someone who teaches the same way school does (which already isn’t working), uses generic materials, or worse — does the homework for your teenager instead of teaching them how to think.

After 25 years of tutoring and working alongside many other tutors, I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t. This post walks you through exactly what to look for, the red flags that signal problems, and the questions to ask before hiring.


What Actually Matters When Choosing a Tutor

Parents often focus on the wrong things — where the tutor went to college, whether they have a teaching certificate, how polished their website looks. These matter less than you’d think.

What actually predicts results:

✅ Years of one-on-one teaching experience (not just classroom teaching)

✅ Subject-specific expertise in your child’s exact need

✅ A teaching approach that builds understanding, not just procedures

✅ A track record of real improvements

✅ A communication style that connects with your teenager

Let me break these down.


Qualification 1: Teaching Experience

Knowing math and knowing how to teach math are completely different skills. I’ve seen brilliant mathematicians who can’t explain why \( \frac{2}{3} \div \frac{1}{4} = \frac{2}{3} \times 4 \) in a way a 13-year-old understands.

What to look for: 5+ years of one-on-one tutoring experience, experience with your specific topic, and the ability to explain concepts multiple ways. If the first explanation doesn’t land, a good tutor has three more ready.

Questions to ask: “How long have you been tutoring one-on-one? How many students have you worked with on this specific topic? Can you walk me through how you’d explain [concept your child struggles with]?”


Qualification 2: Subject-Specific Expertise

A tutor who teaches “all levels of math” is not the same as a tutor who specializes in what your child actually needs. SSAT prep, for example, requires shortcuts and strategies that don’t appear in any school curriculum — Pythagorean triples, time management for 25 questions in 30 minutes, knowing when to skip and when to guess. A general algebra tutor won’t know these.

The same applies in reverse: an SSAT specialist may not be the right fit for a student working through AP Calculus.

What to look for: A tutor whose student base and materials are focused on your child’s specific need — not someone who claims to do everything.

Questions to ask: “What percentage of your students are working on [specific topic]? What materials do you use? Can you describe a typical session?”


Qualification 3: Teaching Approach

Helping with homework is not the same as teaching understanding. Some tutors walk students through procedures without ever building the conceptual foundation that makes future topics manageable. This creates dependence — the student can follow along in a session but can’t work independently on a test.

What to look for: A tutor who asks “why” questions, encourages students to explain their thinking, and explicitly aims to make themselves unnecessary over time.

Questions to ask: “How do you approach building conceptual understanding? How do you help students become independent problem-solvers?”

Qualification 4: Track Record of Results

Ask for evidence. Good tutors have testimonials, can describe specific improvements, and are comfortable talking about what kinds of students they work best with.

Questions to ask: “Can you share examples of students in similar situations? What kind of improvements do you typically see? Do you have testimonials I can read?”

A tutor who gets defensive when asked about results, or who can’t describe any specific student improvements, is a red flag.


Qualification 5: Rapport with Your Teenager

A tutor can be brilliant and experienced but ineffective if your teenager doesn’t feel comfortable asking questions. The best academic outcomes come when students feel relaxed enough to say “I don’t understand” without embarrassment.

What to look for: Patient, encouraging, relatable — and willing to adjust their approach when something isn’t clicking.

Hannah, who worked with me for two years in Monaco, put it this way: “Whatever topic I was having trouble with, she made it easy to understand… I never felt like I was asking any ‘stupid questions.’ She made the lessons fun and the time always flew by.”

The best way to assess this: schedule a trial session and watch. Does your teenager seem comfortable? Are they asking questions? Do they seem engaged?


Red Flags: When to Walk Away

Does the homework for your child. If your child’s homework is suddenly perfect but they can’t explain any of it, the tutor is doing the work for them. Ask your child: “Can you walk me through how you solved this?” If they can’t, keep looking.

No structured plan. Reactive tutoring — just covering whatever homework is due — doesn’t address underlying gaps. A good tutor starts with a diagnostic, sets clear goals, and tracks progress. You should always know what’s been covered and what’s next.

Generic materials. A tutor who uses only the school textbook or pulls random problems from Google isn’t teaching strategically. Test-specific prep requires test-specific materials. Topic-focused practice requires organized, graduated difficulty — not whatever comes up.

Poor communication with parents. You’re investing real money. You deserve regular updates with specific feedback: what was covered, what’s improving, what still needs work. Vague answers or defensiveness when you ask about progress are red flags.

Claims to teach everything. Specialists consistently get better results than generalists. A tutor who advertises every math level from elementary to college usually isn’t expert at any of them. Ask for their specific track record in your area.


Big-Name Programs vs. Independent Tutors

Many families start by looking at well-known test prep companies. These programs have recognizable brands and often include practice tests, video lessons, and AI-powered tools — but there’s a trade-off worth understanding.

Most big-name programs push you toward packages: a fixed number of hours bundled with resources you may or may not use, at a price point that can run into the thousands. Getting genuine one-on-one attention within these programs is often harder than it looks, and the pacing is determined by the program, not by your child’s actual needs.

With an independent tutor, the model is different. You start with a session, identify the gaps, and build from there. The pacing is determined by what your student actually understands — not a preset schedule. If your child only needs a few hours of targeted help, that’s all you pay for. If they need ongoing support, you continue. A good tutor sends you the resources you need when you need them, not upfront in a bundle.

I have a current GRE student who could only commit to a few hours of tutoring. We spent our first session identifying her gaps, worked through some problems she’d struggled with, and I sent her a chapter to work through on her own. For our next session, she sent me six specific problems she wanted to go over, and we planned which area to move to next. That’s what genuinely individualized tutoring looks like — and it’s hard to replicate in a program format.

Questions to Ask Before Hiring

Use these in any initial consultation:

About experience: How long have you been tutoring this subject one-on-one? How many students have you worked with in this specific area?

About approach: How do you structure sessions? How do you balance homework help with filling conceptual gaps? How do you build independence?

About materials: What materials do you use? Do you provide practice problems between sessions?

About results: Can you share testimonials or describe students you’ve helped in similar situations? How do you track progress?

About logistics: Do you offer a trial session? What’s your cancellation policy? How do you communicate with parents?


The Bottom Line

The right tutor makes a genuine difference — not just in grades, but in how your teenager feels about math. The wrong one wastes time and money without addressing the real gaps.

What I hear most from students and parents isn’t just “the grades improved” — it’s “math is finally starting to make sense again” and “can we add an extra session this week?” That shift, from dreading math to genuinely engaging with it, is what good tutoring produces. And it tends to happen faster than most families expect.

Focus on teaching experience, subject-specific expertise, a conceptual approach, a track record of results, and genuine rapport with your child. Use the trial session to assess whether your teenager feels comfortable and engaged. Trust your instincts — if something feels off, keep looking.
